George Macfarlane died in London after an operation in November, 1927, at the age of 66.
An Australian by birth, he spent the first eleven years of his professional career in the Northern Territories and Queensland.
In 1899 he went to Canada as general manager of the Saskatchewan Gold & Platinum Dredging Co., and in 1901 he was appointed general manager of the Woodlark Island Proprietary Gold Mine Co., New Guinea. In 1902 he returned to Australia, where for about five years he was mine superintendent and engineer on various mines, principally in Western Australia. In 1907 he was appointed general manager of the Adja Bippo and Cinnamon Bippo mines in West Africa. From that date onward his professional activities were almost exclusively confined to the Gold Coast Colony, with the exception of a short period spent on the Mawchi mine, Burma, until 1926, when he took over the management of the Talargoch mine in North Wales.
Mr. Macfarlane was elected a Member of the Institution in 1909.
