David William Stanley McArthur died on the Gold Coast in December, 1911, at the age of 29 years.
He was educated at the University of Adelaide, where he obtained the degree of B.Sc. and a Fellowship of the South Australian School of Mines. In 1908 he started practical work as a mill hand with the British Broken Hill Proprietary Co., and in the same year obtained an appointment with the Stannary Hills Mines and Tramway in North Queensland, and for three years subsequently was manager of the principal mine of that company.
From 1907 to 1910 he occupied a similar position on one of the mines of the Irvinebank Mining Co. In 1910 he decided to leave Queensland for the purpose of taking a post-graduate course in the United States, but was induced to take up an appointment on the Gold Coast instead, and while there an attack of fever caused his death.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1911.
