Thomas Edwin Matthews died at Penzance, Cornwall, on April 20th, 1931, at the age of 37.
He received his technical training at the School of Mines, Penzance, and at Camborne, one year and two years respectively. On leaving Camborne he obtained an appointment as mining assistant at the Barramia Mining & Exploration Co., in Upper Egypt, remaining there from July, 1913, to March, 1915, when he returned to England to join H.M. Forces as a sapper in the R.E. In August of that year, he received his commission as lieutenant in a field company, R.E., to which he was attached until August, 1919.
In December, 1919, he went to West Africa as surveyor to the Bisichi Tin Co. (Nigeria), Ltd., with whom he worked until May, 1928, when he had to he invalided home.
Mr. Matthews was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1914, and was transferred to Associateship in 1922.
