Matthew Lothian Lowden died in Portugal on August 13th, 1923, from an attack of fever, at the age of 36.
He was educated at Glasgow Academy, and in 1902 went to King William’s College, Isle of Man. On completion of the course in 1905, he served a three years’ apprenticeship with Messrs. D. & W. Henderson, shipbuilders and engineers, of Glasgow, with the proviso that for six months in each year he was able to attend at three years’ course at the Glasgow of West of Scotland Technical College. In 1908 he was appointed mechanical and assistant mining engineer in the Coia. Tinoca, Ltd., Lisbon, and in 1911 was given full charge of the mines at Tinoca and Azeiteiros. He was on the Granja mine of the same Company at the date of his death.
Mr. Lowden was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1916.
