Frederick Hugh Beauchamp Leggett died of pneumonia in Tanganyika on June 21st, 1935, at the age of 45.
He received his technical training at Oundle Engineering College and the Truro School of Mines, acting during part of the time as surveyor and assistant mill manager at the Alfred Mines in Cornwall.
In May, 1909, he went to Rhodesia, where he was employed for about two years as assayer and surveyor at the Jumbo and Bushtick Mines, followed by a further eight months on the Rand. Returning to England he was for about a year on china clay and tin mines in Cornwall, and then went to Nigeria as manager of mines owned by the Tin Areas of Nigeria, Ltd. In July, 1914, he was appointed construction engineer of Tough Oakes Gold Mines, Ltd., in Canada, but from September, 1915, to February, 1919, served in France. He then returned to Tough Oakes as general manager.
In January, 1921, he went to Burma, where he successively occupied the position of manager of the Coalfields of Burma, Ltd., and the Bawzaing Silver – Lead Mine, Kalaw Mining Syndicate, and Shan States Silver – Lead Corporation, Ltd. A few years later he went to Central America, where he was engaged with the Panama, Corporation, Ltd., and in 1982 was employed by the Mocupia. Mining Co., El Callao, Venezuela. In 1934 he was appointed by Sir Robert Williams & Co. to open up the Sanza goldfield in Tanganyika for Kentan Gold Areas, Ltd.
Mr. Leggett was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1921, and was transferred to Membership in 1925.
