Herbert Lawn died on 23rd July, 1962.
Mr. Lawn was educated at the Barrow Higher Grade and Organized Science School and in France. His early mining training was gained at the various mines of Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Ltd., and from 1904 to 1906 he also undertook technical courses in ore and stone mining, ore dressing and machine design and construction. In 1906 he took up the post of assistant mining engineer with Cleveland Cliffs Iron Ore Co., Michigan, U.S.A., having responsibility for engineering work at Austin mine.
In the following year Mr. Lawn returned to Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Ltd., as chief surveyor of the company’s mines and quarries, remaining in that position until 1911, when he joined Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Ltd. He remained in Ashanti until 1912 when he re-joined Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Ltd., being associated with the company for the remainder of his life. In 1929 he was promoted mines and quarries manager, and in 1935 moved to the Cleator Moor area of Cumberland where he was engaged in re-opening certain of the company’s mines. Ill health led to Mr. Lawn’s retirement in 1945, but he continued his association with the company in the capacity of consultant until his death.
Mr. Lawn was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1917.
