John Walker Lake died at Eastbourne on October 20th, 1918, aged 26 years.
He was educated at the Royal School of Mines and obtained a First Glass Associateship in Mining in 1913. He was awarded an Institution of Mining and Metallurgy Post-Graduate Scholarship of fifty pounds upon the results of his Associateship examination; and was at the same time selected for a Post-Graduate course in Spain. This he resigned, before completion, on the outbreak of the war, when he returned home to enlist in one of the regiments of the County of London. His health was not proof against the rigours of military training and in less than six months he was invalided from the Army. Tubercular trouble ensued, and he was ultimately obliged to give up all ideas of returning to Spain to continue his Post-Graduate course. He lingered on for more than three years, but the brilliant promise of his early years was cut short one the date mentioned above.
Mr. Lake was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1911.
