Alfred Henry Knight died at Oxton, Birkenhead, on February 11th, 1937, at the age of 78.
His professional work started in 1877, when he became assistant to the late J.S. Merry, of Swansea. Six years later, in 1883, he started in business, at Liverpool, as metallurgical chemist and assayer, and the firm that bears his name is still conducted by his son, Mr. Leslie Knight, M.Inst.M.M., who joined him in 1919.
He was a keen volunteer, and for 18 years commanded the Mersey Division (Submarine Miners) Royal Engineers, a force entrusted with the mine defences of the Port of Liverpool. He retired as full Colonel in 1905, having gained the Volunteer Decoration.
Mr. Knight, who was a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1911.
