Alexander Kirk died suddenly in Scotland on 2nd August, 1950, at the age of 49.
He began his mining career as an apprentice engineer with the Fife Coal Co. in their Eastern Area collieries from 1915 to 1919, and was then employed for two years by the Wemyss Coal Co., Ltd., Fifeshire, as surveyor. He studied at the Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh, from 1921 to 1927, gaining the Associateship in mining engineering and the B.Sc. degree in mining and metallurgy.
In August, 1928, Mr. Kirk joined the staff of Ooregum Gold Mining Co. of India, Ltd., as surveyor, two years later being promoted chief assistant surveyor. He was appointed chief surveyor, Champion Reef Gold Mines of India, Ltd., in 1938, and was employed in the position of chief surveyor of Champion Reef-Ooregum Joint Operation on the Kolar Gold Field at the time of his death.
Mr. Kirk was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1941.
