William Kelly died as the result of a fall on October 1st, 1937, at the age of 83.
He was an American citizen and received his education in the United States, graduating in Arts at Yale in 1874. Three years later be received the E.M. degree of Columbia University and he also held the degree of D.Eng. of the Rensselar Polytechnic Institute.
In 1878, he began his career at Phoenixville, Pa., as assistant superintendent at the Chemical Copper Co. and he held a similar position at the Kemble Iron Co. from 1880-1884. During the following years he held various high positions in several iron mining companies in the United States, being general manager of the Penn Iron Mining Co. and the Republic Iron Co. He was for a time a member (and later Chairman) of the Board of Control of the Michigan College of Mines, and President of the Lake Superior Mining Institute.
His interest in education is further shown by his membership of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education and his activities as President of the Board of Examiners of Bituminous Mine Inspectors of Pennsylvania. Mr. Kelly’s many contributions to technical literature included pamphlets and papers in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Proceedings of the Lake Superior Mining Institute.
Mr. Kelly was elected a Member of the Institution in 1903.
