John Tracey Keating died suddenly in London on March 14th, 1922, in his 50th year.
An Australian by birth, his first professional engagement was in June, 1894, when he became underground manager of a part of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s mine. Two years later he was appointed manager of the Girofla Silver mine at Chiligo, North Queensland. Within the next two years he held similar positions on two mines on the Hodgkinson Goldfield. In November, 1899, he left Australia to take up the position of assistant manager of the Mijnbouw Maatschappij, Sebalan, West Borneo, subsequently being promoted to manager of an adjoining mine owned by the Goud Exploratie Maatschappij, and consulting engineer to Mr. W. Birnie, of Soerabaia, Java, and Mr. B. Liddelow, of Sambas, West Borneo.
He then undertook exploration and research work for a syndicate in Singapore, and on the conclusion of that work he accepted the position of manager of the Mijnbouw Maatschappij Soemalata’s mine and smelting works. He remained in the East until 1912, when he accepted a position with the Nigerian Tin Areas, Ltd.
Mr. Keating was elected a Member of the Institution in 1906.
