John Evans Jones died in Johannesburg in November, 1920, as the result of an accident, at the age of 38.
He was educated at the Portmadoc County School and at King’s College, London, and in 1906 he went to South Africa to take up the position of assistant surveyor to the Crown Mines, Ltd. Between 1907 and 1910 he held the posts of head sampler and development shift-boss at the Ferreira Deep, and in 1910 he transferred his services to the Village Deep, where he was successively shift-boss, mine captain and underground manager.
He came back to England in 1915, and obtained a commission in the R.E., Tunnelling Section, being subsequently gazetted Captain. At the conclusion of the war he returned to South Africa.
Mr. Jones was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1917.
