Arthur Johns was killed instantly by a shell on September 25th, 1917, whilst helping to load stretchers with wounded. He was 28 years of age.
He was educated at Camborne School of Mines and on the conclusion of his course in 1908, spent some months on some lead and zinc mines in North Wales, gaining practical experience in mining. He then went to Cumberland and for a year and a half acted as manager’s assistant and surveyor to the Buttermere Green Slate Co., Keswick. After a year at Prestea, West Africa, as surveyor and sampler, he returned to the Buttermere Green Slate Co. in 1911, and for eighteen months served the company in the capacity of assistant manager and surveyor.
His last appointment before the outbreak of the war was with the Lower Bisichi Tin Mines, Ltd., of Naraguta, Northern Nigeria, as assistant engineer.
This appointment he resigned in August, 1914, and returning to England joined the City of London Yeomanry (Roughriders). Subsequently, at the beginning of 1917, he was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers,
Mr. Johns was elected an Associate of the Institution In 1915.
