Stephen Joseph Jefferys died of Spanish influenza in the Transvaal on October 12th, 1918, at the age of 35 years.
During 1902-3 he was a student at the Redruth School of Mines, and shortly after the completion of his course he went out to South Africa as assistant sampler at the George Goch Gold Mine. After a few months he transferred to the North Randfontein, where he was consecutively assistant sampler, chief sampler, shift boss and developer. In May, 1909, he was appointed mine captain at the Gold Estates Mine, Klerksdorp, and within a few months returned to the George Goch Mine, first as shift boss, then as chief sampler. In March, 1912, he went to the Randfontein Central Gold Mine to reorganize the sampling department, and thence to the Apex Mine, Benoni as check sampler. His next post was as shift boss at the Jumpers Deep Mine, Cleveland, followed by the position of chief sampler to the Luipaardsvlei Estate G. M. Go., at Krugersdorp. In 1914 he joined the staff of the Roodepoort United Main Reef G. M. Co., and in 1916 returned to Benoni, to the New Kleinfontein Co., Ltd.
Mr. Jefferys was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1913.
