Alan William Howard died at Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia, on July 11th, 1944, at the age of 35.
He attended the Royal School of Mines from 1927 to 1930, being awarded a first-class Associateship in Mining and obtaining the degree of B.Sc. (Eng.) with first-class honours in 1929. He stayed another year to take the Mining Geology course, gaining an Associateship in that subject and B.Sc. (Min. Geol.) degree. He was also awarded the De La Beche Medal and the Warington Smyth Medal in 1930.
In August, 1931, he took up an appointment as assistant geologist with the Roan Antelope Copper Mines, Ltd., in Northern Rhodesia; and five months later became chief sampler, which position he held for over two years. He then served as a shift boss, and was subsequently transferred to the staff of Mufulira Copper Mines, Ltd.
Mr. Howard was elected a Student of the Institution in 1929, and was transferred to Associateship in 1937.
