Andrew Sheddon Howie died of pneumonia at Zvecan, Yugoslavia, on September 23rd, 1938, aged 57.
In 1896 he began six years’ practical work in various Scottish coal mines before entering the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, for a course in mining engineering. He obtained his Associateship of the College in 1906. During the same year he obtained his 1st Class Mine Manager’s certificate, and was appointed underground manager of the Polmaise collieries in Stirling, Scotland.
In the following year he went to Peru and for the next ten years he was employed there by the Backus & Johnstone Mining & Smelting Co. During the last four years of his stay in South America, he was superintendent of the group’s mines in the Morococha district.
His work was interrupted by the Great War when he served from 1917-18 with the Royal Engineers. After the war, Mr. Howie returned to Peru where he undertook consulting work, but he gave up this work after a short time owing to bad health and returned to Scotland. In 1928 he went to Yugoslavia as general manager of Trepca Mines, Ltd., and other interests of Selection Trust, Ltd., occupying this position at the time of his death.
Mr. Howie was elected a Member of the Institution in 1985.
