Laurence Collier Hatch went into action at Loos on September 25th, 1915, and has not been heard of since. He was at first reported as ‘missing’; but ultimately the Army Council came to the conclusion that he must have been killed during the fight. He was only 21 years of age when he lost his life in the defence of his country. In the early stages of the war he obtained a commission in the Durham Light Infantry, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
Mr. Hatch, who was a son of Dr. F.H. Hatch*, a Past-President of the Institution, was educated at the Bergakademie at Clausthal in the Harz, and at Cambridge University. He was entered as a student at the Royal School of Mines, and was to have started his course there in October, 1914, when the outbreak of the war caused him to change his plans and enter the Army.
Mr. Hatch was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1914.
