George Sydney Harriss died on 29 November, 1965. He was 72 years of age.
Educated at the Royal College of Science for Ireland and at the Royal School of Mines, London, where he gained the Associateship in 1920. During the first world war Mr. Harriss served with the Royal Engineers, attaining the rank of captain.
His first professional post was that of surveyor with Lobitos Goldfields. Ltd., Colombia; he remained with the company until 1928, by which time he was field superintendent in charge of operations. After brief periods of employment in Venezuela and Brazil, Mr. Harriss returned to the United Kingdom in 1933 and set up a motor engineering works on his own account in Kent.
In 1935 he moved to what was then the Gold Coast, undertaking engineering and surveying work with various companies; he then joined British Guiana Consolidated Goldfields. Ltd., British Guiana, as general manager, serving in that capacity until 1947, when he returned to Africa to join Bremang Gold Dredging Co., Ltd. Initially chief engineer, he was subsequently appointed general manager and remained with the company until 1956. He then joined Anglo Oriental (Malaya) Ltd. as electrical engineer — a position he held until 1959.
Mr. Harriss then returned to the United Kingdom and was engaged for a number of years in part time engineering work.
Mr. Harriss was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1944. He was also an associate member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
