Norman Harper died of wounds in France on April 15th, 1918. He was 30 years of age, and at the time of his death had attained the rank of Lieutenant in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, which he joined as a private shortly after the outbreak of the war.
He was educated in New Zealand, and from 1906, to 1909 was a pupil with Messrs. Gillies and Spence, Civil and Mining Engineers, of Greymouth, New Zealand. He spent a further year with the same firm as assistant engineer, and then entered upon an engagement as surveyor to the Blackwater Mines, Ltd., at Nainta. After a year’s service he was promoted to the position of chief surveyor, which he held until September, 1914, when he joined the Army.
Mr. Harper was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1911, and transferred to Associateship in 1916.
