Richard Hamilton died at Perth, Western Australia, on March 16th, 1943.
An Australian by birth, he began his mining career as assistant to Mr. Frederick Clark of the Beehive Crushing Works, Eaglehawk, Victoria, and during the 10 years he spent in this capacity he attended the Bendigo School of Mines, taking first prize in Chemistry and Metallurgy in 1888.
After spending over two years in charge of mines in Mysore, India he returned to Australia as manager of gold mines near Nundle, New South Wales, and two years later was appointed general manager of the Tucson Mining and Smelting Co., Arizona. He remained in this post for two years, and subsequently spent six months designing and erecting copper smelting works in California. At the end of 1895 he returned to Australia to take up the post of general manager of Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines Ltd., Kalgoorlie, where he remained for the rest of his professional life. For many years he was President of the Chamber of Mines of Western Australia.
Mr. Hamilton was elected a Member of the Institution in 1896.
