Henry Leonard Haag died at Jos, Northern Nigeria, on February 8th, 1943, at the age of 38.
He was educated at Westminster City School and entered the Royal School of Mines in 1923, graduating with the A.R.S.M. and B.Sc. (Engineering), both with first-class honours, in 1926. In September of that year he left England for Nigeria to take up an appointment with Gold Coast Consolidated Lands, Ltd., and in January, 1927, was appointed acting manager of that company’s alluvial tin properties. In October, 1927, he was appointed manager of the company, a position which he held until his death.
He was at all times an ardent reader and student, and was greatly interested in music (he was an accomplished pianist), astronomy, and photography. The results of his keen observations in Nigeria were made available to members in his paper ‘Wolfram in Nigeria: with Notes on Cassiterite, Wolfram, and Columbite Zones’, published in the Bulletin for January, 1943.
Mr. Haag was elected a Student of the Institution in 1926 and was transferred to Associateship in 1931.
