Charles Frederick de Jersey Grut died in Western Australia on November 2nd, 1921, in his 49th year.
In 1895 he left Oxford with the degree of B.A., and subsequently he went to Australia, where he graduated as B.E. at Sydney University in 1901. For about a year he was in the United States, gaining experience in various capacities at Butte, Montana, but in 1902 he returned to Australia to undertake mining and construction work in North Queensland.
In 1908 he took up his permanent residence in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Where he practised as a consulting mining engineer and conducted a chemical laboratory. In this connection he designed and in the majority of cases erected and supervised the running of filter press plants at a number of mines and public crushing plants, besides being bullion assayer to all the local banks. He was also appointed to act on Government Commissions in relation to mining scandals and law cases.
Mr. Grut was elected a Member of the Institution in 1913.
