William Clarke Grummitt died on 6th March, 1948, at his home at Oldham, Lancashire, at the age of 55.
He received his technical education from 1911 to 1914 at Manchester University, from which he graduated with the B.Sc. (Geology) degree with first class honours. He was appointed assistant geologist to Messrs. Bird & Co., India, in 1915, and served for a year with the Indian Army Reserve of Officers from 1917 to 1918, attached to the 3rd Skinner’s Horse. From 1918 to 1921 he continued his employment with Messrs. Bird & Co. on the South Karanpura coalfield and prospecting in Singhbhum and Orissa. He practised for six months during 1921 as consulting geologist, and was then appointed geologist in charge of mineral investigations, mainly for coal, for Messrs. Garg Bros. & Co., of Calcutta, Mr. Grummitt returned to England in 1923 to enter the Camborne School of Mines and gained his diploma in 1925.
He then went to Northern Nigeria for Anglo-Continental Mines Co., Ltd., and in 1927 was appointed acting manager to Jarawa Tin Dredging, Ltd., and Juga Valley Tin Areas, Ltd, at the same time prospecting for gold in the Minna district for Associated Tin Mines of Nigeria, Ltd. From July, 1931, to October, 1933, Mr. Grummitt was in practice as consulting geologist, but went again to Northern Nigeria for Nigerian Gold Mines, Ltd., of which he became acting manager in 1935. During that year he was made M.Sc. (Geology) of Manchester University. In 1937 he entered the employment of Ashanti and Gold Coast Mining Corporation, Ltd., at Kumasi, and in 1938 transferred to London Nigerian Tin Mines, Ltd., at Bukuru.
He returned to England in 1946 and settled in Oldham.
He was elected to Associateship of the Institution in 1924.
