Richard Clewin Griffith died at Hendon, Middlesex, on 11th December, 1955, at the age of 83.
He was educated at Charterhouse School and received his professional training at the Royal School of Mines between 1890 and 1892. He joined Societa di Pertusola (Lord Brassey’s works at Spezia) in 1892, and a year later entered the business of his father, Daniel C. Griffith and Co., assayers to the Bank of England, analytical chemists, independent samplers, agents for ores, and in 1894 became a partner in the firm. He succeeded his father as head of the company in 1919.
Mr. Griffith retired to St. Leonards, Sussex, in 1950. He had been President of the Royal School of Mines Old Students’ Association in 1921-22, and was well known as a chess celebrity.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1914.
