George Aubrey Gow died after long periods of serious illness at his home in Palmerston North, New Zealand, on July 30th, 1938, at the age of 59.
He received his technical training at the Otago School of Mines from 1897-1900 and he obtained his Associateship of the school in both mining and metallurgy. From 1901-3 he was in charge of the cyanide works at the Wealth of Nations mine and then followed five years of various milling work. In 1908 he visited London and in the same year went to Sumatra as battery manager and assayer with the Ketahoen Mining Co., later being engaged in a similar capacity with the Redjang Lebong Mining Co. He was with the Ketahoen company again in 1916 as cyanide manager and three years later he was engaged for like work by the Simau Mining Co., of Bankoelen.
He served further short periods with the Redjang Lebong and Simau Companies before going to Japan in March, 1926, as mill superintendent of the Taio Gold Mining Co. He was later employed by the Chosen Syndicate, Ltd., as a cyanide specialist to investigate metallurgical difficulties. In 1935 he returned to New Zealand and later left for the Gold Coast where he was mill superintendent at Bibiani. Later he was invalided to London, and returned to New Zealand.
Mr. Gow was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1909 and was transferred to Membership in 1928.
