Selwyn Goldstein was killed in action in France on June 8th, 1917, at the age of 44 years. He obtained a commission in the Royal Engineers in October, 1915, and was subsequently promoted Lieutenant.
He was educated at Melbourne University, and afterwards spent two years visiting various mines and works in Victoria, and gaining experience in the practical side of his profession. In 1897, he became manager of some cyanide works in Tasmania; and in 1898 held a similar position at cyanide works in Victoria.
He then went to Western Australia, and for eight years was manager to the Great Boulder No.1, Ltd., at Kalgoorlie. For the last two years of this period he also held the position of chief metallurgist to the Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines, Ltd. After a year as manager to a copper mining company in Western Australia, Mr. Goldstein came to England, and after a few months sojourn in London, proceeded to Mexico, where he practised as a consulting mining engineer for about three years.
He returned to England in 1912, and between that year and the time of his joining the Army, he made one or two journeys, to America on professional business.
Mr. Goldstein was elected a Member of the Institution in 1909.
