James A. Gilmour died in Glasgow on January 15th, 1914, aged 48 years. He had been suffering from a throat trouble for some time, and caught a chill after having undergone an operation, which ended fatally.
He received his technical training at the Royal School of Mines, taking the Associateship in Metallurgy in 1887; and after spending eighteen months on office work, was engaged for two years as works manager at an ironworks. Later he was engaged at some collieries and iron mines in Cumberland.
Mr. Gilmour then went to Nicaragua, where he was engaged as assistant and subsequently as general manager of the Santa Francisca Gold Mines, Ltd., ultimately becoming director and managing director of the company. For about two years previous to his death he had, been living in retirement at his home, in Scotland.
Mr. Gilmour was elected a. Member of the Institution in 1899.
