Gwynn Gilbert Gibbins was killed in action at Salonika in July, 1917, whilst serving as Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. He was 28 years of age.
He was educated at McGill University, Montreal, where he graduated in Arts, Science and Mining Engineering, obtaining in the last-mentioned faculty the Douglas Research Scholarship. His course at McGill extended over nearly seven years, and his vacations were occupied by surveying work in various parts of the Dominion of Canada.
In the summer months of the years 1906 to 1911 he worked successively on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Survey on Skeena River, British Columbia; on bridge location surveys in the Nelson District, British Columbia; as assistant on the Geological Survey of Canada at Texada Island, British Columbia, and as head of the McGill Field-work Survey School in British Columbia; as Chief Assistant to Dr. Cairnes in his work for the Geological Survey of Canada in the Yukon and in the Atlin District, British Columbia; and as assistant on the Geological Survey of Canada in the Portland Canal Mining District, British Columbia. At the close of his University career Mr. Gibbins became assistant to Dr. J. M. Bell in his geological work on the Atbasar Copper District, Siberia, and afterwards assisted the same geologist in the examination of various properties in Canada.
He joined H.M. Forces as 2nd Lieutenant in the West Lancashire Divisional Engineers (T.), in June, 1915, and was promoted Lieutenant in the following November.
Mr. Gibbins was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1918.
