George Haslewood Foster was killed in action in Flanders on March 21st 1918, whilst serving as 2nd Lieutenant in the Tunnelling Section of the Royal Engineers. At the time of his death he was 32 years of age, and had held his commission in the Royal Engineers since August, 1917.
He was educated at Liverpool University, where he obtained the degree of B.Eng. in 1906; and proceeded thence to the Royal School of Mines, obtaining the A.R.S.M. in the first class in 1908. He was selected by the Institution for a post-graduate course at Broken Hill, New South Wales, and for three years worked in various capacities in the works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co., Ltd., both at headquarters and at Port Pirie, South Australia.
In 1912 he spent several months in England on vacation, and then accepted a post with the Borneo Co., Ltd., of Bau, Sarawak, Borneo, where he remained till, the end of 1916.
Mr. Foster was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1908, and was transferred to Associateship in 1913.
