Melville John Charles Foot was drowned near Nkana, Northern Rhodesia, on 18th May, 1959. He was 26 years of age.
Mr. Foot was born in Penzance, Cornwall, and attended the County grammar school there between 1945 and 1951. He spent the next three years as a student at the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining and during the 1953 vacation he worked for six weeks in Northern Rhodesia with Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd. Mr. Foot gained a first-class Associateship of Camborne in 1954.
During his National Service in 1955 and 1956, Mr. Foot was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, and served with B.O.A.R. in Germany. On discharge in November, 1956, he returned to Northern Rhodesia as a learner official with Rhokana Corporation, Ltd.
Mr. Foot was one of a group of adults who took a party of Sunday School children for a treat to a lakeside near Kitwe, and lost his life while swimming there on his own.
He was elected a Student of the Institution in 1954.
