Arthur Harry Flowerdew died on 15th November, 1953, at Nairobi, Kenya. He was 78 years of age.
He was born in Norfolk and educated at Framlingham College, and before entering the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining in 1909 had had three years’ experience in Rhodesia as secretary and sampler at Theta mine and Sabina mine. On obtaining the Diploma of the School in 1912 he took up the position of manager at Gurum River (Nigeria) Tin Mines, Ltd.
Two years later, in June, 1914, Mr. Flowerdew went to Malaya where he was to remain for more than 30 years. His first post there was as general manager of Tronoh South, Ltd., Perak, which he held until 1917. He later set up in practice as consulting mining engineer with headquarters at Kuala Lumpur. In 1938 Mr. Flowerdew went to Australia as general manager of Harrietville (Tronoh), Ltd. He was made a director in 1939 and was Chairman between 1940 and 1942, when he was appointed managing director. He resigned from the firm in March of the following year, but remained in Australia until 1945.
He was for many years a member of the F.M.S. Chamber of Mines and had served on the Council of the Chamber and held the office of President. He was a member of the Selangor State Council in 1932 and a member of the Kuala Lumpur Town Board for six years. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace by His Highness the Sultan of Selangor in 1948. Mr. Flowerdew left Malaya for Kenya only a short time before his death.
Mr. Flowerdew was elected a Student of the Institution in 1911, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1914 and to Membership in 1918. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society and a past-president of the Royal Society of St George, the Selangor Miners’ Association and the Engineering Association of Malaya.
