Manuel Fernández-Balbuena died in Spain on 10th January, 1954. He was 74 years of age.
On graduating in mining engineering at the Royal School of Mines of Madrid he was appointed mining engineer to the Spanish Government in 1902, holding that post until his promotion in 1943 to General Inspector of Mines. In October, 1904, he set up in practice as consulting mining engineer and was connected subsequently with Huelva Copper and Sulphur Mines, Anglo-Spanish Copper Co., and La Compagnie de Mines de Cuivre de San Platon. From 1904 he was also a member of the professorial staff of the government mining school at Huelva. In January, 1911, while still working independently, he was appointed technical manager of the group of Spanish mines of the French Société de St. Gobain, principal acid manufacturers in France. In 1922 Senor Don Fernandez-Balbuena became managing director of Mineas de Herrerias and Castillo de Las Guardas (Huelva). He was associated with the glass industry in Spain from 1934, being president of Veneciana S.A., vice-president of Cristaleria Espafiola S.A., and director of other glass manufacturing companies.
Senor Don Manuel Fernández-Balbuena was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922. He was president of the Mine Owners’ Association of Huelva from its inception in 1927 until his death.
