Harold Gowans Ferguson died in London of double pneumonia following influenza, after five days’ illness, in November, 1918, aged 28 years.
From July, 1907, to February, 1910, he was employed as a pupil at the works of Messrs. Fraser & Chalmers, Ltd., at Erith, and during that period engaged in a course of evening study at the Erith Technical Institute. In March, 1910, he went to the works of the Murex Magnetic Co., Ltd., where he was engaged in testing and concentrating ores of all descriptions, and for six months was specially detailed to assist in erecting and running one of the firm’s plants at the mine of the Cordoba Copper Co., Ltd., Cordoba, Spain. Following that experience, he went to the Camborne School of Mines in September, 1911, where he remained until June, 1913, obtaining the School Diploma. In August, 1913, he was appointed assayer and surveyor at the mine of the Poderosa Co., Ltd., at Collahuasi, Chile.
He joined H.M. Forces during the war and received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. In 1916 he was promoted to Captain. He had two and a-half years’ service in France, and in October, 1918, he was awarded the Military Cross and received his Majority in the London R.E.
Mr. Ferguson was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1918.
