James Archibald Faull died on 10th December, 1952, in London, at the age of 57.
He entered the Redruth School of Mines in 1911 as an evening student while still at Redruth County School, and in 1912 became a full-time student. He received a first class certificate from the School in 1914, and took an appointment with the Cornwall Tailings Co. as assayer in November, 1914, subsequently spending two months as surveyor with Carnon Valley (Cornwall), Ltd.
In March, 1915, he went to Egypt as general assistant to Barramia Mining and Exploration, Ltd., under the management of Messrs. John Taylor and Sons, and in 1917 became assistant mine agent. Two years later he joined the Q.S.P. Syndicate as topographic surveyor in Egypt, and in 1920 returned to England. Later that year he was engaged in Sinai as assistant to the field superintendent of British Sinai Petroleum Co., Ltd.
From 1921 to 1927 Mr. Faull was employed by the Sinai Mining Co., Ltd., first as assistant mining engineer at their Om Bogma mines, in 1922 being promoted mining assistant to the manager and three years later being appointed manager of the company’s properties in Egypt. From 1927 to 1940 he held the position of manager of Mines de Fer de Sebabna, Algeria, owned by Mr. James Campbell and later by Northern Mercantile and Investment Corporation, Ltd.
Between 1940 and 1942 Mr. Faull was detained in Morocco by the Vichy authorities, and on his release joined Sierra Leone Chrome Mining Co., Ltd., as assistant manager. He returned to England in 1944, and in 1945 was appointed agent and manager of the Florence and Ullcoats mines of Millom and Askam Hematite Iron Co., Ltd., at Egremont, Cumberland. He was made general manager of the company in 1950.
Mr. Faull was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1928, and was transferred to Membership in 1931.
