Algernon Fairfax-Scott died in Switzerland on 30th November, 1954, at the age of 71.
Mr Fairfax-Scott was employed by a stone quarrying company in England from 1902 to 1906, then joined African Association, Ltd., traders, of Southern Nigeria. His early connexion with mining was as general assistant and accountant first at Bibiani, Ltd., from 1911 to 1914, then at Jos Tin Areas (Nigeria), Ltd., until 1919. He was employed by Naraguta (Nigeria) Tin Mines, Ltd., managing the company’s tin mining operations at Korot Areas during 1920 and 1921, then being transferred to Sho Areas until July, 1924. After prospecting in the Kaduna river district, he returned to Sho Areas for two months and then took charge of Naraguta Korot Areas, Ltd. In March, 1927, he was appointed manager of Naraguta Karama Areas, Ltd., at Sho. He left Nigeria in 1930 to travel extensively in the next four years on the Continent, and in 1935 was prospecting and dredging on the Gold Coast.
Mr. Fairfax-Scott worked in Serbia as general manager of the Kalna Mining Co., from 1936 to 1940 then went back to Nigeria. He was with Kaduna Syndicate, Ltd., Jos, until 1943 and then with A.O. Nigeria, Ltd., until 1946. In 1950 he again visited Nigeria, for Jos Tin Areas, Ltd., and on his retirement went to live in Switzerland.
Mr. Fairfax-Scott was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1929.
