Hans Gotthard End died in Burma on 27th February, 1951. The car in which he was travelling with Mr. W.H. Jennings was ambushed near Tavoy by Communist rebels, and he died on the way to hospital after being shot.
Mr. End, who was of Swiss nationality, was 43 years of age. He entered the School, of Metalliferous Mining (Cornwall) in 1929 and obtained the Associateship of the School in 1931. After taking a special course in geology at Geneva, in May, 1932, he joined S.A. Bauxite de France at Brignoles, Dept. du Var, to gain experience.
He was appointed visiting mining engineer by the Orient Erzbergbau A.G., Lucerne, in 1933 for their chromite mines in the Near East, and two years later took up employment with Anglo-Oriental (Malaya), finally holding the position of assistant district superintendent. He did not leave Malaya until 1942, when he took up the appointment of area engineer to Amalgamated Tin Mines of Nigeria, Ltd. In October, 1945, he joined the Swiss Federal Mines Department in Berne as a temporary inspector, but relinquished that appointment to return to his post with Anglo-Oriental (Malaya), Ltd. He resumed work in Malaya in 1947 with Rawang Tin Fields, Ltd., being promoted to district manager, Tavoy Tin Dredging Corporation, Ltd., in 1950.
Mr. End was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1931 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1939.
