John Percy Edgerton died in hospital on 16th October, 1954, at the age of 76.
He received his technical education from 1893 to 1901 at various London technical colleges and at the Technical Institute, Sheffield, and from 1894 to 1897 was a pupil of Mr. Leo Taylor, an assayer and public analyst for Hackney. Mr. Edgerton was employed during 1898 as assistant chemist to the Sheffield United Gaslight Co., and from 1899 to 1903 as assistant chemist to the public analyst for Poplar and Whitechapel.
He held the post of gas examiner under the London County Council for many years from 1900, but during 1904 set up in practice as a metallurgical chemist, assayer and analytical chemist with offices in London. He continued his practice until his death.
Between 1914 and 1916 he was a part-time lecturer on chemical industries for the London County Council and in 1917 was appointed part-time lecturer and demonstrator in the Chemical and Metallurgical Department of the City and Guilds of London Institute and at Guy’s Hospital.
Mr. Edgerton was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1919. He was a Fellow of the Chemical Society and a member of the Institution of British Engineers and of the Society of Public Analysts and other bodies.
