Walter Currie died in Rhodesia on April 28th, 1933, at the age of 71.
He was born at Pietermaritzburg, Natal, and was educated in Switzerland and at Granbrook. He started practical mining in 1884 by working his own claims at Barberton, Transvaal, and remained on the Rand for ten years in association with the pioneers of the gold-mining industry in that country. In 1894 he was sent by John Hays Hammond to act as assistant to the consulting engineer to Willoughby’s Consolidated Co., Ltd., and on the death of his principal succeeded to his position at Bulawayo. He was associated with the Globe & Phoenix Mine from its earliest days.
He was keenly interested in the welfare of that portion of South Africa, and was J.P. for Matabeleland.
Mr. Currie was elected a Member of the Institution in 1911.
