Robert Duncan Connell died on 1st August, 1951. He was 75 years of age.
Mr. Connell entered the London laboratory of the late Edward Riley as an assistant in 1895, and during the following two years was for part of the time in charge of a branch laboratory at iron mines in Elba, Italy.
From 1897 to 1900 he held the position of chief chemist to Messrs. W.H. Pearson & Co., London, leaving to become agent in Elba for Messrs. H. Bomer & Co., London, a position which he held for three years. From 1903 to 1904 he was chemist to the Caucasus Copper Co., Ltd., leaving to take up the position of chemist and assistant engineer to the Central Provinces Prospecting Syndicate, Ltd., at their manganese mines in India.
In 1910 Mr. Connell was appointed manager of the Salem Magnesite Works in South India where he remained until his return to England in 1921 as a director of the Magnesite Syndicate, Ltd., which incorporated the Salem Magnesite Works. He still held that position at the time of his death, and was also a director of other companies including Alexander Stone Co., Ltd.
Mr. Connell was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1911.
