Ernest Charles Clutterbuck died in London early in 1925.
He was educated at Repton School, Modern and Engineering side, and on leaving school he was articled to Messrs. Walker & Hartley, mining and civil engineers, of Whitehaven, Cumberland, at the same time studying chemistry and assaying under Dr. Hellon, the County Analyst. On completion of his articles in 1901 he was for some months chief assistant to the firm.
In 1902 he went to Spain as assistant manager of the Sovia Mining Co.’s mines at Gergal and Jabugo, but he returned to England in 1907 to prospect, examine and report on mines in the United Kingdom on behalf of Mr. J.F. Wake, of Darlington.
In 1912 he went to Nigeria as engineer to the Central Lafon Tin Fields but had to return home towards the close of the year through illness, and resumed his work with Mr. Wake for a short period before proceeding to South America to take up an appointment with the Pataz and Parcoy Syndicate, Ltd., in Peru.
During the war he held a commission in the Royal Engineers and at the conclusion of hostilities he was still attached to the Allied Forces at Archangel. Subsequently, he went to West Africa to the Niger Minerals Development Co., Ltd., at Jos.
Mr. Clutterbuck was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1918.
