William James Nimmo Dunnachie was killed in action and his name was published in the General Headquarters Casualty List which appeared in the press on April 24th, 1916. He was 34 years of age and had held a commission in the Royal Engineers. Shortly, before his death he had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

He served as an articled pupil for five years with Messrs. Johnstone & Rankine, a Glasgow firm of civil and mining engineers; and then spent rather loss than a year as assistant to the general manager of the West of Fife Collieries, Ltd.

In 1905, he gained his first class Mine Manager’s certificate; and after taking a short course in assaying, in Glasgow, went to Natal and was occupied for some months in the erection of plant for the Talana Collieries, Ltd., of Dundee. In 1906, he joined the staff of the Consolidated Langlaagte Gold Mines, Ltd., and remained with the company for five years, gaining several promotions during his period of service. Subsequently he held appointments with the Geldenhuis Deep, Ltd., and the New Rietfontein Gold Mines, Ltd., and returned to Glasgow for a well-earned rest and vacation the year before the outbreak of the war.

Mr. Dunnachie was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1911.
