Donough Bennet Donovan died suddenly, of heart failure, at Johannesburg, on August 16th, 1924.
From 1905 to 1908 he underwent technical training at the Cape University and South African School of Mines and Technology for the purpose of obtaining the diplomas, and on completing his course he was appointed head sampler of the Jupiter Gold Mining Co.
Within the next few years he was assistant surveyor at the Simmer Deep, Ltd., and head surveyor at the May Consolidated, Ltd., mines. He then transferred to the Roodepoort United G.M. Co., Ltd., where he was senior shift boss and mine overseer, and thence to the Langlaagte Estate G.M. Co.
In 1915 he went to West Africa to join the staff of the Abbontinkoon Mines, Ltd., first as surveyor and afterwards as mine superintendent, and, with a brief intermission of about a year as acting superintending engineer to the Fanti Consolidated Mines, Ltd., he remained in that employ for about eight years. He subsequently returned to the Transvaal.
Mr. Donovan was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1918.
