Louis Charles Deverell died at Carhampton, Somerset, on August 22nd, 1916, aged 41 years.
He received his professional training at the Camborne School of Mines, After two years of practical metallurgical and mining work in the West of England, he went as assistant chemist to Mr. Benedict Kitto, and later held the position of chief assistant to that gentleman for nearly four years. Subsequently he set up in practice in the City as an analytical and consulting chemist and mining engineer, and during that period of his career went to the Sudan, where he made an analytical and geological examination of some gold deposits and mines near Suakin.
In 1908 Mr. Deverell was appointed chief chemist to the Straits Trading Co. at Singapore, and held this post for six years; but in 1909 his health broke down, and he was compelled to resign, and although he undertook other engagements during the next five years, he suffered all the time from constant ill-health.
On his return from Singapore he went to Japan, and afterwards to West Africa, on professional business; and from 1912 to 1914 held an appointment at Penang with the Eastern Smelting Co., which was his last engagement.
Mr. Deverell was admitted to Associateship of the Institution in 1901, and was transferred to Membership in 1905.
