Christopher Yule Bruce was killed in action on March 28th, 1918, whilst serving as Lieutenant in the Tunnelling Section of the Royal Engineers. He was 32 years of age, and had held his commission since the autumn of 1916.
He served his apprenticeship from 1902 to 1905 with an Aberdeen firm of marine engineers, and afterwards studied at Birmingham University, where he took the mining course and obtained his degree in 1909.
He gained an Institution Scholarship in the same year, and proceeded to South Africa for his post-graduate course, which he took on the Simmer Deep gold mine, Germiston, Transvaal. After passing through various departments of the mine, he was appointed mine captain at the end of 1911, and held this position for five years, when the company released him from his engagement to go on active service.
Mr. Bruce was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1908, and was transferred to Associateship in 1918.
