Robert Gilman Brown died on July 6th, 1933, following an operation for appendicitis.
A United States citizen by birth, he graduated from Columbia College School of Mines, New York, and at once took up work in his own country. For six years he was mine superintendent and manager at the Butte Mines, Montana, at the same time acting as assistant superintendent of the Butte Reduction Works copper smelter. He was then appointed manager of the Standard Consolidated Mining Co. at Bodie, California. In 1907 he came to this country, and practically spent the rest of his life in connexion with British enterprises.
One of the first of his engagements on this side of the Atlantic was with the Ymir Gold Mining Co. For some time he was interested in the management of the Geevor tin mines in Cornwall. Later he was appointed to the Board of the Mining Trust and the Russo-Asiatic Consolidated, with which he was associated until his death.
He was elected a Member of Council of the Institution in 1912, held the office of Vice-President for four years, 1916-21 and 1922-23, and occupied the Presidential Chair during the session 1923-24.
Mr. Gilman Brown was elected a Member of the Institution in 1895.
