Mostyn Lance Brown died suddenly in Northern Rhodesia on 14th November, 1959, at the age of 45.
Mr. Brown was born in Australia and educated at Adelaide, receiving his technical training at Adelaide Technical High School and later at the South Australian School of Mines and Industries. He was a full-time student there from 1932 to 1933 and then continued his training until 1939 while serving as a cadet in the electrical engineering laboratory and subsequently as a junior demonstrator. He was awarded the Associate Diploma in Metallurgy of the School in 1940.
His first appointment was as research metallurgist and assayer at Mount Morgan Ltd., Queensland, from 1939 to 1940, and he then held a similar appointment for two years with Central Milling Co., Ltd., Tennant Creek. Between 1942 and 1945 he was engaged as chemist with Australian Commonwealth Munitions in the Hendon Small Arms factory and in the Detonator Section.
Mr. Brown went to Northern Rhodesia after the war to join the staff of Roan Antelope Copper Mines, Ltd. He was test engineer in the concentrator department from 1946 to 1949, and in July, 1949, was appointed concentrator general foreman. He held that position at the time of his death. For many years Mr. Brown had been a prominent member of the Northern Rhodesian Mine Officials and Salaried Staff Association.
Mr. Brown was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1952.
