Fredrick Joseph Bourne died in Victoria, British Columbia, on 28th November, 1948, at the age of 83.
Born in Devon, Mr. Bourne left England for Canada at an early age. He worked for eight years as a marine engineer before undertaking mill work at Ropes gold mine Michigan U.S.A. From 1903 to 1906 he was employed as erecting engineer and metallurgist by Allis Chalmers Co., Milwaukee, and in 1906 was appointed consulting engineer, Northern Customs Concentrators, Ltd. He designed and supervised the erection of the company’s mill at Cobalt, Ontario, and was responsible for the successful concentration of the complex ores there. He remained in full charge of the plant for several years and travelled widely in his capacity as consulting engineer.
He retired to a farm at Kamloops, and some years later settled in Victoria, British Columbia.
Mr. Bourne was elected a Member of the Institution in 1912.
