Aloke Bose died of influenza at Sakchi on October 15th, 1918, aged 34 years.
From 1906 onward he went through the full metallurgical course at the Birmingham University, including metallurgy, geology, practical chemistry and engineering. With a view to specializing in the metallurgy of iron and steel he also took special lectures at the Technical Institute. Part of the University course comprised a month’s practical work at iron and steel works at Darlaston, and he also visited a number of works of metallurgical interest in different parts of the country.
On the completion of his course, Mr. Bose left for India in October, 1908, travelling via America and Japan and visiting various works on the journey. From January, 1909, to June, 1910, he was manager and chemist to a copper prospecting concern in the Darjeeling district, and for the following six months was chemist to a similar company in the Manipur State.
In March, 1912, he was appointed assistant in the Government Laboratory for testing steel at Sakchi, B.N. Ry., where the Ta-ta Iron and Steel Works are situated, and remained with that department until his death.
Mr. Bose was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1907, and was transferred to Associateship in 1917.
