Joseph James Blight died at Lagos, West Africa, in March, 1929, at the age of 37. He had just landed on his return from leave in England.
His professional career started in September, 1907, when he entered into practical mining at the South Crofty mine for a period of two years, during which he attended evening classes at the Camborne School of Mines. This was followed by a course of two years’ duration at the School of Mines, and in September, 1911, Mr. Blight was appointed chief surveyor at the Carn Brea and Tincroft niines, holding the position for eight years.
In 1919, he went to the Shropshire Lead Mines as sub-manager, and after a brief engagement in Scotland in 1923, he returned to Cornwall as assistant Manager of the Kingsdown and Tincroft mines.
In 1927, he went to Nigeria as engineer in charge of the Jemaa section of the Nigerian Consolidated Vines, Ltd., in whose service he was at the date of his death.
Mr. Blight was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1928.
