Torrington Blatchford died at Roebourne, Western Australia, on May 28th, 1938, at the age of 69.
From March, 1886, to December, 1896, he received his technical training, first at Newington College, Sydney, and afterwards at Sydney University, and obtained honours in all subjects he studied, and the B.A. degree of the university. Following a brief period as science master at Scott’s College he was in March, 1897, appointed senior assistant Government geologist, Western Australia.
From 1900 to 1911 he was in partnership with Frank B. Powell, R.A. Black and other mining engineers, after which he undertook special work for the Government. In 1912 he was appointed assistant Government geologist, and later assistant State mining engineer, at the same time acting as a member of the board of examiners for mine managers under coal mining regulations.
In 1926 he was appointed Government geologist for the State, a position he held practically to the date of his death. He also engaged latterly in private consulting practice.
Mr. Blatchford was elected a Member of the Institution in 1934.
